Summer and winter
Skellefteå is one of those places you can visit all year round. In the summer, the city is a vibrant seaside resort. Once the summer is over, Skellefteå becomes a winter sports resort with more ski tracks than any other area in Sweden.
Places to visit
Proving resort status, Skellefteå has a host of museums, sights and interactive experiences. Local museums include Stackgrönnans Boat Museum, where there's an exhibition of maritime artefacts. There's also Bergrum Boliden, a museum that explains the history of mining in Skellefteå and the surrounding region.
To see examples of local art, head for the Nordanå Culture Centre. Browse through a number of art galleries and buy refreshments at the café. You'll also find a playground for children.
Other places you should visit include the Cheese House at Burträsk and Wilderness Mine at Varuträsk. Take a guided tour of the mine. It's an adventurous trek and you can even collect your own precious stones.
Another unique destination is Svansele Wilderness Centre. After you've viewed the exhibition, take a snowmobile safari and end the day by relaxing in a hot tub.
There many indoor and outdoor activities at Skellefteå for all ages. Ski enthusiasts can choose from 15 ski centres in and around the city. Many of them are lit at night and have cafés, restaurants and bars.
In the middle of Skellefteå is the Vitberget complex. This is the type of venue you can return to day after day. There are running tracks, ski slopes, ice rinks, a curling rink and an outdoor swimming pool. There's also an adventure house, where you can try to solve the mental and physical challenges posed in each of the 47 rooms.
Elsewhere in Skellefteå, you can enjoy 10-pin bowling at Bowlingkompaniet, go-karting at the Fastec Ring go-kart track and golf at Rönnbäcken Golf Course. Rönnbäcken has 9- and 18-hole courses, a practice green and a driving range.
Outside Skellefteå, hike on one of the many nature trails. These are signposted and have well maintained footbridges and pleasant areas where you can rest. Among the most popular trails are Mineralleden and Nasaleden.

There is a river running through the town and it's close to the sea. We rented kayaks and spent a day exploring the coastline and small islands. The Swedish Allemansrätten, the right of public access to nature, makes it possible to go ashore pretty much everywhere.
