TRANSPORTATION IN NEW YORK CITY

New York is actually a perfect city for walking. There are not that many big hills and the city layout makes it easy to navigate on foot. 

When speed is of the essence there are different ways of getting round in New York City. The subway, taxis and ferries are the most popular means of transportation in the Big Apple. 

 

NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY – BUY A METROCARD

The New York City Subway is one of the largest subway systems in the world. It has more than 450 stations in operation. It connects Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. 

Staten Island is not connected to the rest of the subway system. To get here you need to take a bus or ferry. 

The MetroCard is a must have when using public transportation in NYC – saves you both time and money. It is similar to London’s Oyster Card.

 

THE FAMOUS YELLOW CABS OF NEW YORK

The yellow cabs of New York City are iconic. They are great for short trips around the city. If you want to travel by taxi to e.g. the airport there are usually a fixed price. Ask your hotel, the cab driver or call the taxi company. 

It is easy to get a taxi in New York. You get a taxi by hailing it – stick out your arm above your head. A taxi is available if the sign on the roof is lit. 

 

THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY - TRAVEL BY BOAT IN NEW YORK

The Staten Island Ferry is a passenger ferry. The yellow ferry sails between the Whitehall Ferry Terminal (South Ferry) in Manhattan and St. George Ferry Terminal in Staten Island. 

The ferry is free of charge and it is an ideal way of seeing the Manhattan skyline. It is part of New York City’s public transportation system. 

You can use the ferry 24 hours per day 7 days a week. A ferry ride to Staten Island takes approximately 23 minutes. 

 

NEW YORK CITY – THE BIG APPLE

New York City is comprised of five boroughs – Manhattan is the most known one. The other four are Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. The city is situated at the mouth of the Hudson River. 

The city has a population of approximately 8.5 million people. Manhattan is one of the most densely populated places in the world. 

The Big Apple is a nickname for New York City and it was first popularized in 1920 by John J. Fitz Gerald. The nickname was later used in a promotional campaign in the 1970s. 

Manhattans skyline is world famous with many iconic buildings. The tallest building in New York City is One World Trade Center which rises 1.776 feet (541 m.). Other iconic sites include the Empire State Building, Central Park, Broadway and Times Square. 

New York City is one of the major commercial, financial and cultural centres of the world. 

 

THE HISTORY OF NEW YORK 

New York City is not one of the oldest cities in the world. However, it has an impressive history both historical and cultural. It was founded in 1609 by the Dutch. 

During the revolution New York City became an important city. The history of the iconic city is complex and filled with interesting stories and buildings scattered throughout the city.  

 

THE FOUNDING OF NEW YORK CITY

The Lenape, an Algonquin people, were the first native people in the area around New York. It is also from the native people that Manhattan got its name. The meaning of the word is “Island of many hills”. 

The area now known as New York City was discovered by Europeans in 1524 by Giovanni da Vernazano. But it was not until 1609 Henry Hudson settled in the area and started exploring. The settlement later became New Amsterdam. 

New York got its name in 1664, when the British took control. 

 

NEW YORK CITY DURING THE REVOLUTION

It was in New York that the Americans got their first victory in the Revolutionary War. On May 10, 1775, the Americans caught the British by surprise and took Fort Ticonderoga without firing a single shot. 

New York declared its independence on July, 1776 and became one of the original 13 states of the Federal Union. 

 

THE FIRST CAPITAL OF THE UNITED STATES 

The first capital in the United States was not Washington D.C. New York City became the first capital in the country’s history and remained so until 1790. 

New York was also where the first President of the United States was inaugurated. George Washington had his inauguration in the city in 1789. 

 

THE FIRST SKYSCRAPER – THE BEGINNING OF AN ERA

New York City got its first skyscraper in 1902. The skyscraper is still one of the iconic buildings in the city. 

The first skyscraper was called Flatiron building and it is located at 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue. The iconic shape of the building like an old flatiron is where the building got its name from. More skyscrapers soon followed and the Manhattan skyline slowly grew into what it is today. 

 

SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS IN NEW YORK

When trying to make a list of sights and attractions in New York City it is almost an impossible project. There is something interesting on literally every corner. 

New York City is one big attraction with new and interesting things happening all over. There are a lot of big sights but some have been synonymous with the city throughout the years. 

 

RELAX IN CENTRAL PARK

You can relax for a couple of hours in New York City’s urban park. The park located in middle-upper Manhattan are one of the most visited parks in the United States. It has also been the setting of numerous films.  

It was established in 1875 and is today 843 acres. Central Park has been a designated Natural Historic Landmark since 1962. 

There are a number of interesting sights in the park, so it is definitely a place worth visiting. Central Park has seven bodies of water and one of these is called Turtle Pond, where a large number of turtles live alongside other wildlife. 

 

GET A VIEW FROM THE SKY

One of the characteristics of New York City are the skyscrapers. From the top of the tallest ones, you can get an amazing view of the city and all of its boroughs. 

The most famous observation decks open for the public are the ones at the Top of the Rock and the Empire State Building. You can also get up the very top of One World Trade Center. 

 

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY AND ELLIS ISLAND

The Statue of Liberty resides in the harbour of New York City on Liberty Island. It is a big neoclassical sculpture that was donated from France in 1886. The sculpture was built by Gustave Eiffel, who also built the Eiffel Tower. 

If you want to see the Statue of Liberty, one of the best ways are on one of the different cruises and boat trips. A roundtrip typically includes both Liberty and Ellis Island. 

Ellis Island is where all immigrants were registered, when they arrived at New York City. You can visit the Ellis Island National Immigration Museum and Wall of Honor at the island.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES IN NEW YORK

You will find many prestigious and inspiring museums and galleries in New York City. Some of the more famous are Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History and the Whitney Museum of American Art. 

One of New York’s hidden gems are the High Line. It is a park built on the New York Railroad tracks in Lower West Side of Manhattan. It is a beautiful park and a piece of green art in the middle of New York – it ends at the Whitney Museum. 

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space museum is a military and maritime history museum. It consists of a collection of museum ships. The Intrepid itself is an old aircraft carrier that participated in WW2, the Cold War and the Vietnam War before being retired.  

 

DINING AND NIGHTLIFE IN NEW YORK CITY

There is a place to eat and drink for literally everyone in New York. You can get a 1$ pizza slice or visit a gourmet restaurant. There are also many different types of bars in the city, so it depends on what you are in to. 

A good way to find the good local restaurants is to ask people on the streets. They are more than happy to give you advice on where to eat and drink.

Chelsea Market is located at the beginning of the High Line at 75 Street and 9 Avenue - the meatpacking district.  It is a food hall and shopping mall where you can find some delicious food and drinks.
