England has an spectacular nature, which inspired writers to write classics such as Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice and Alice in Wonderland. The English countryside varies a lot from north to south. In the southern England, you will find idyllic areas with stunning landscapes and charming villages, country houses, cathedrals and universities. In the northern England, you will see a roughed nature with steep hills and heathland.
SAIL THE CANALS
A unique way to experience England is to sail the canals, which meanders through the country. Be your own captain and sail with your own boat or take one of the guided tours. The stunning lake district, Lake Windermere and Ullswater, in Northwest England is worth a visit.
GO HIKING IN ENGLAND
England’s beautiful scenery are made to be discovered by foot. Go for a hike and become a part of the rugged coastline, see mountains covered in snow and feel the crisp air on your face. Hike along Hadrian’s Wall in northeast England and see one of the most preserved English relics, which became a part of UNESCO Heritage site in 1987. Hadrian’s Wall was as a fortress in year 122, when England were a part of the Roman Empire.
A COUNTRY WITH HISTORY AND MYSTERY
England is a country with many traditions and historic monuments. The oldest landmark is Stonehenge, which is a prehistoric monument, dating back from between 3000 BC and 2000 BC (before Christ). Stonehenge has been involved in a lot of mystical tales and a few conspiracy theories, since it always has been unclear exactly what the monument was used for. The theories ranges from astronomy-observations, a site for religious prayers and to a burial site.
Other historic places worth visiting are The Tower of London, which is a fort from the middle ages that holds England’s crown jewels. The university city, Oxford, are the perfect place to visit if you want to walk down old streets and get a feeling of the old England.
NORTHERN ENGLAND – VIKINGS AND MODERN CULTURE
Northern England has a lot to offer and attracts thousands of tourists each year. The old Viking city York are the city besides London, which attracts most tourist each year. York is home to the biggest gothic cathedral, York Minster, in North Europe. Jorvik Viking Centre takes you 1000 years back in time to when Vikings sailed the seven seas.
When visiting northeast England, you should visit the dynamic city Newcastle that offers great shopping and a colourful culture. Visit the new art museum Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, located in the old corn silo. Liverpool is worth a visit, if you are a Beatles fan or just enjoy interesting culture and city life. Visit Tate Gallery Liverpool, which are a branch of the famous Tate Gallery in London.
VISIT THE CHARMING PENINSULA WALES
Wales is a southwest peninsula that are a part of England, but it stands out thanks to its own cultural identity. Wales offers beautiful nature like Snowdonia national park, which with its canyons, lakes, waterfall and green hills impresses anyone who visits.
Wales’ biggest holiday spot, Llandudno, has maintained an old Victorian charm despite many years of invasion.
