Treasures of the Albanian Riviera
MAY 2024
Albania’s capital Tirana is a jewel in itself, with a unique mix of culture, history, vibrant nightlife, and fantastic dining experiences. But if you move a little further away from the city center, you will discover a world of coastal treasures, with idyllic beaches lining the edge of the country’s Riviera. We have put together a selection of beach resorts you won’t want to miss if you’re flying to Tirana.
Durrës
Durrës is one of Albania’s largest cities and a popular but still relatively undiscovered vacation destination. Families with children, friends traveling together, and tourists looking for opportunities to relax and unwind are drawn here by the sheer versatility that this city offers. Here you will find long, glorious beaches (the longest in Albania!) that invite visitors to soak up the sun or take a dip in the sea, but also a vibrant city with a wide range of both bars and nightclubs. Durrës is also rich in history and boasts several impressive sights ripe for exploring – including the fascinating amphitheater (which is also the largest in the Balkans).
How to get there: By bus, car, or taxi. Buses running between Durrës and Tirana depart several times a day and the journey takes 30 to 40 minutes.
Dhërmi
Dhërmi is a charming village about three hours from Tirana airport. It is a seaside resort with postcard-perfect beaches and fantastic swimming opportunities – but it has more to offer, too, with its picturesque white stone houses, cobbled streets, and small squares waiting to be explored. When it comes to accommodation, there are several little gems hidden away in Dhërmi, like the impossibly charming Zoe Hora boutique hotel, perched up on the mountainside overlooking the beautiful city. And you can also take the opportunity to walk along the Mills Trail, a route that stretches all the way from the upper part of the city down to the shoreline and takes about 45 minutes to complete.
How to get there: By bus, car, or taxi. The bus journey takes about 3.5 hours.

Himarë
In Vlorë District, approximately 3.5 hours’ drive from Tirana, lies the enchanting seaside resort of Himarë with its spectacular beaches, crystal-clear waters, and chilled-out atmosphere. There are plenty of secluded beaches that you can access by boat. Book a guided tour or rent a kayak to discover these hidden gems for yourself. Also worth a visit is Himarë Castle, a centuries-old fortress perched atop a hill above the capital. The castle was built a staggering 3,500 years ago and offers a fantastic panoramic view – making it the perfect place to enjoy the sunset over the beautiful coastline.
How to get there: By bus, car, or taxi. The bus journey takes about 4 hours.
Ksamil
Ksamil is yet another enchanting destination along the beautiful Albanian Riviera. Here you can spend your time lazing on the sunny beaches or rent a paddle boat to explore the sparkling waters. Head to one of Ksamil’s many beach clubs to enjoy a drink or a delicious meal. Albanian cuisine will get your mouth watering with a variety of delicacies worth trying – from the traditional and flavorful dish tavë kosi, consisting of slow-cooked lamb or chicken in a creamy yogurt and egg sauce, to the tasty cheese-filled pie-like byrek.
How to get there: By bus, car, or taxi. Buses run from Tirana to the nearby town of Sarandë, where you can then change to a local bus or taxi to Ksamil. The journey takes about 6 hours.
