Tips for a smooth trip to Schottland
Plan ahead and be on time
For a smooth and stress-free trip to Schottland, make sure you check your departure time and the terminal you’ll be using before you travel. With SAS, you can complete your digital check-in on our website or in the SAS App up to 30 hours before departure, helping you save time at the airport. Arriving early — especially during peak travel periods — gives you a more relaxed start to your journey and ensures you’re fully prepared for your flight to Schottland.
Pack smart
When planning your trip to Schottland, take a moment to review what you’ll need throughout your journey. Confirm that your ticket includes the baggage allowance that suits your travel plans and check the current weight and size limits. Adding extra baggage through the SAS App or website before you fly is often quicker and more cost-effective than arranging it at the airport. For a smooth start to your travel to Schottland, review our latest baggage rules and restrictions so you’re ready well before departure.

Which airport is best for reaching the Scottish Highlands?
It depends on which part of the Highlands you plan to visit. Edinburgh Airport is often the best choice if you are heading towards the eastern areas or the Cairngorms National Park. Glasgow Airport is strategically better located if you are travelling towards the west coast, Loch Lomond, or onward to islands such as the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Skye. We offer smooth connections to both cities via our Scandinavian hubs.
What is it like to hire a car and drive in Scotland?
Car hire is available directly at both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, making it easy to pick up your vehicle right after you land and collect your baggage. As an SAS passenger or EuroBonus member, you can pre-book your car through our partners to enjoy seamless pick-up and earn points on your rental. Scotland drives on the left, and while Highland roads can be narrow with local "passing places", the routes from both airports are well-signposted and easy to navigate.
When is the best time to visit Scotland if you want to avoid the Scottish midges?
The tiny Scottish biting insects, locally known as midges, are most active in the Highlands and western regions during the summer months, particularly from June to August, when the weather is humid and still. If you plan to hike or camp and want to avoid them completely, it is a good idea to schedule your trip for the spring (April to May) or early autumn (September to October). The landscape is also often at its most colourful during these times.
