Restricted items
For safety reasons, you may not carry certain items on your person, in your carry-on or checked bags, or in both. And some items may only be carried in carry-on baggage.
Airport security is authorized to confiscate any restricted items, and both carry-on and checked baggage are thoroughly inspected at the airport.
Items that are not permitted
- Explosive substances or devices including ammunition, blasting caps, detonators, fuses, mines, grenades or other explosives, fireworks or other pyrotechnics, smoke-generating canisters/cartridges, dynamite, gunpowder or plastic explosives 
- Compressed, solid or oxidizing gases 
- Magnetic, radioactive, poisonous or corrosive materials 
- Devices designed to stun or immobilize, e.g. stun guns, tazers 
- Disabling sprays, e.g. pepper spray, animal repellant 
Items that may only be carried in your carry-on
- Portable power banks 
- Electronic cigarettes including e-cigarettes, e-cigars and vapes. Please note that you may not use these on board. 
- Spare batteries of any type 
- Lithium batteries (removed from devices). For more information about transporting lithium batteries, refer to IATA guidelines 
Items that must be packed in checked baggage
- Guns, firearms or other devices that discharge including toy guns, flares, slingshots or other projectiles 
- Objects or tools with a sharp edge 
- Blunt instruments including batons, bats and sports equipment 
Powder-like substances
Powder in containers over 350 ml is not allowed in carry-on baggage on flights to the US, except for:
- Prescription medicine 
- Powdered baby food (in original packaging) 
- Cremated ashes 
We recommend packing powder-like substances in checked baggage. Check Federal Aviation Administration guidelines for more information about restricted items on US-bound flights.
UK rules on restricted travel items
The following items may not be carried into security areas or in carry-on or checked baggage when traveling to or from the UK:
