Pets traveling in hold
If your pet doesn’t meet the criteria to travel in the cabin, it will need to travel in the cargo hold. To arrange this, just contact SAS Customer Service. Please note that we can only transport dogs and cats in the hold and that you won’t be able to visit your pet during the flight.
Pet container/cage requirements
Escape-proof container that meets IATA regulations.
If the container or cage doesn’t meet IATA regulations, your pet may be refused at check-in.
Size and weight limits
Max weight: 50 kg (including pet).
Max size: depends on the aircraft type.
Up to 2 adult pets of similar size (max 14 kg each) can share a container except on flights to the US.
Up to 3 pets of up to 6 months from the same litter may be transported in the same container.
Certain snub-nosed (brachycephalic) dogs such as bulldogs, pugs, Pekingese and crossbreeds of these may not travel in the hold for health reasons.
The pet must also be able to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably inside the container.
Snub-nosed dogs & cats
Some snub-nosed dogs, such as bulldogs, pugs, Pekingese and their crossbreeds, may not travel in the hold. Other snub-nosed dogs and cats may travel in the hold in a container, provided the container is large enough and the door has open bars from top to bottom to ensure adequate ventilation. The pet must also be able to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably inside the container.
How to book a pet in hold
Contact SAS Customer Service when you book or up to 24 hours before departure (subject to availability).
If your pet is confirmed, you’ll need to fill out a Certificate for Transportation of Animals (DOC) and bring 2 copies to the airport (except on domestic flights in Denmark, Norway and Sweden).
If your request is denied within 24 hours of booking and you rebook your flight, we’ll waive the rebooking fee, but you’ll need to pay any difference in price.
Fees for bringing a pet on board
You’ll need to pay a fee to bring a pet in the cabin or hold. Fees vary depending on your route and destination and are charged per flight. Service dogs travel free in the cabin.
Pets in cabin and in the hold
When traveling with SAS, you can bring your pet with you. Depending on the animals' breed, size, weight, and age they can travel in the cabin, in the cargo hold or be shipped as cargo.

Special pet travel rules by destination
Travel to/from United Kingdom
SAS does not accept pets in the cabin or as checked baggage on flights to and from the United Kingdom.
Pets must be transported as cargo.
Exception: Certified service animals are permitted to travel in the cabin.
Travel to the US
From 10 April 2025, new rules apply for traveling to the US with a dog, including service dogs, on trips from 22 April 2025.
For flights departing from 22 April 2025, your dog will need to be at least 6 months old, and you’ll need to:
Complete the CDC dog import form and bring it to the airport
Ensure your dog has a microchip
Please note that if your dog has been in a high-risk country for rabies within the last 6 months, it is not permitted to fly with SAS to the US.
If you do not comply with the new CDC rules, your dog will be denied boarding.

Travel to Greenland
You need special permission from the Greenlandic Representation to bring a pet into Greenland.
Travel to Svalbard
You need permission from the Norwegian Animal Health Authority to bring a dog into Svalbard. Please also note that cats are not allowed.
Traveling to Iceland
You need an import licence from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority to bring a pet into Iceland.
