Traveling with a service dog

If you're traveling with a service dog, we’re happy to accommodate your needs on board. We recommend that you book your service dog at least 48 hours before departure either when you book your trip, under My trips or by contacting SAS Customer Service

Once we approve your request, we'll require details about your dog's health, training and behavior based on your destination.

Travel requirements for service dogs

Your dog must be a fully trained service dog and meet the following requirements to travel in the cabin with you.

  • Be on duty and identifiable (wearing a vest).

  • Have undergone behavior training (no barking, growling or jumping).

  • Remain under your control at all times (with leash and/or harness).

  • Sit or lie on the floor in front of you without blocking the aisle. If not, you’ll need to book and pay for an extra seat.

Documentation you need for your service dog

You're responsible for ensuring your service dog has the required documentation based on where you're traveling.

Once your service dog is confirmed, you'll need to complete 2 copies of the Certificate for Transportation of Animals and present them at check-in (except on domestic flights).

You'll also need to have these documents handy during your trip:

  • Medical certificate verifying the need for the service dog.

  • Veterinary health certificate and vaccination records.

  • Certificate from a certified service dog trainer outlining the dog’s specialized training.

Flights to/from US

If you're traveling on a direct flight to or from the US, you can bring 2 service dogs free of charge. You'll also need to complete 2 copies of the Service Animal Air Transportation Form and Service Animal Relief Attestation Form to present at check-in.

For connecting flights outside the US, you'll need to complete the Certificate for Transportation of Animals

In accordance with US Department of Transport regulations, SAS may refuse to allow your service dog on board.

FAQs

Is there a limit to the number of service dogs that can travel on a flight?

If a flight can't accommodate a service dog, the option to book a service dog won't be shown and you'll need to search for another flight except on flights to and from the US where there is no limit to the number of service dogs on each flight.

What if my service dog doesn’t fit on the floor in front of my seat?

If your service dog cannot sit or lie on the floor in front of you, you’ll need to contact SAS Customer Service to book and pay for an extra seat. If the animal is too big to sit or lie in front of you and the extra seat, it will need to travel in the cargo hold.
