Pripyat is the town closest to the Chernobyl power plant. When the nuclear explosion happened in 1986 the whole town was evacuated. Nobody was ever able to move back.

Pripyat is a ghost town. It was evacuated in just a couple of hours on the day after the accident. People were told to only bring their necessities, as they would be able to return in three days. They weren’t. As a result the town is frozen in time. There’s communist propaganda on the walls and people’s personal belongings spread out in abandoned buildings. Pripyat still has some radioactive hotspots – so be careful if you decide to visit, and always go with a guide.

You might have tried chicken Kiev? The chicken fillet that has been rolled around a piece of butter before it’s fried could be Ukraine’s most famous dish. But Ukrainian food has more to offer.

Ukraine is said to be the place of origin for borscht, the soup made from beetroots and beef. Have a bowl while you’re here.

The sweet tooth should try syrniki for breakfast. It’s a quark pancake topped with jam and sour cream. Yum.
