Stockholm museums

The capital of Sweden and one of the most important cultural centres in northern Europe, Stockholm offers a wide range of different museums and galleries to visitors. From art museums and displays of prehistoric artifacts to interactive historical experiences, Stockholm's museums offer something for everyone.

Art from before the 20th century can be found at the Nationalmuseum located on Blasieholmen. This 19th-century building houses tens of thousands of works of art, including an important collection of Dutch masters. Although the Nationalmuseum does have modern art, Moderna Museet, located a short walk away on Skeppsholmen, is the city's foremost modern art collection. Paintings on display include works by Picasso, Dalí, Matisse and Duchamp.

The history of both Stockholm and Sweden are presented in the National Historical Museum and the Museum of Medieval Stockholm. The Museum of Medieval Stockholm is located just north of the Royal Palace and incorporates artifacts from archaeological digs on the site. The National Historical Museum covers not only Stockholm, but all of Sweden, with artifacts dating from periods from the Stone Age to the 16th century.

For those who are interested in a more interactive view of history, Skansen, an open-air museum, preserves Sweden's traditional rural life, with over 100 historic buildings from all over the country. A complete replica of a 19th-century town features craftsmen making traditional products as well as a small zoo showcasing Sweden's native wildlife. Another unusual historical museum is the Vasa Warship Museum. In 1628, during the period of Sweden's military ascendancy, the Vasa, a 68-gun military vessel, sank near Stockholm. The salvaged ship is now displayed at the museum, together with other vessels from Swedish history.
