Winter in Scandinavia

Photo: Henrik Trygg/Innovation Norway

Winter in Scandinavia is a magical time. If you enjoy winter sports, visit Scandinavia and Finland. This is the perfect time of the year for winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, or sledding. Have fun in the snow!

During the winter months, Scandinavia gets 6-7 hours of daylight, but if you go far enough to the north in Norway, Sweden and Finland, the daylight decreases significantly. In certain areas of the Arctic Circle, there is no sun at all for a period of time and during the winter nights you can view the amazing Northern Lights.

Here are a few suggestions of things to see and do in Scandinavia and Finland this winter.

Get enchanted - Northern Lights
Seeing the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is a jaw-dropping and mystical moment. When conditions are favourable you can experience the spectacular magic and beauty of the Northern Lights which dance across the sky. The aurora can be viewed best in the winter and during early evening and night, in northern Sweden, Norway and Finland. Why not combine them with a city break in Tromsø?

See polar bears in Svalbard
The excitement builds even before you reach Svalbard when you realise that you are flying almost as far north as it is possible to fly commercially. As you reach this remote outpost and see signs in the streets telling you to watch out for polar bears, you really understand how unique the excursion is.

Enjoy the thrill - Snowmobile excursions
Snowmobiles are not just unbelievably good fun; they're also incredibly easy to operate. You don't need any experience: guides will teach you how to operate the machines safely.
If you wish to drive, remember to bring your driver's licence. This is a fast-action adventure where you experience Scandinavia's winter firsthand. It is great fun and a remarkably different excursion for adventurers of all ages. Lapland in the north of Scandinavia is the best place to experience the thrill.

Dogsled safaris
Imagine a ride through silent, snow-covered wilds in a husky-drawn sled. It's great fun and a truly exhilarating experience. Don't worry about the cold; the safari operators will provide you with thermal suits and footwear. The trips differ in difficulty level. Choose between being a passenger on a one day trip, or steering your own pack of dogs for several days. One of many places in Lapland to get to know these friendly animals is Kirkenes in the north of Arctic Norway.

Cross-country skiing
Why not try cross-country skiing in Scandinavia? You can enjoy hundreds of miles of groomed cross-country tracks and mountain tracks in beautiful surroundings – free of charge! There are a host of Scandinavian winter resorts that are able to offer unique and internationally unequalled facilities if you are looking to combine alpine skiing with cross-country skiing. You can even combine this with a city trip with many cross-country tracks located just outside the city centres.
