Even though it is the largest city in Sweden, Stockholm conveys a sense of lively intimacy. The fact that you can reach just about anywhere on foot boosts this feeling.

Getting from Arlanda airport to the city center

Once you land at Arlanda Airport on your SAS flight, you will have a variety of options to get into the city. A popular choice for visitors is the Arlanda Express direct train. Some of your other choices include the airport coach called Flygbussarna which also goes to the city center. A Taxi ride takes 40 minutes, but is the more expensive option.

The best of Stockholm

Stockholm's past stretches back to the year 1252. As a result, there are dozens of museums, galleries, historical buildings and other attractions. To choose the best of these is hard, but some stand out thanks to their consistent popularity.

Gamla Stan” is the medieaval centre of the city. Wander through narrow streets among remarkable homes and shops. Close your eyes and imagine medieval Stockholm. Explore the shops in their centuries-old structures, where you'll find art, antiques, handicrafts and delicious cakes served with freshly brewed coffee. Stockholm has more than 200 different restaurants at your picking.

Another must-see area of Stockholm is the island of Djurgården. This is home to the Vasa Museum, a preserved 17th-century shipwrecked warship that was salvaged only 50 years ago. Vasa or Wasa was the most powerful warship of its era and has been visited by more than 29 million people since 1961.

The island is also home to the Skansen Museum and Junibacken theme park. Skansen is the oldest open-air museum in the world, while at Junibacken, you can experience the characters and stories of the children’s author Astrid Lindgren, among others. Bring you kids to the Skansen zoo as it´s a particular favorite for children with a full range of regional animals from wolverines to reindeer. There´s even a dedicated petting zoo for the smaller kids.

Such attractions are signs of Stockholm's respect for the past. However, the city also has a vibrant modern cultural life. For evidence of this, visit the Moderna Museet and see the displays of modern art, for examples of recent Swedish design, go to the National Museum.

Parks and water

Stockholm is a city that lives comfortably alongside green spaces, water and wildlife. The national city park of Ekoparken exemplifies this. It's the first of its kind in the world and covers 17 square miles. It lets you go from the city to the countryside and back again within a short walk. It’s the perfect spot for a family picnic in the summer.

A few tips

A boat trip is also a great way of seeing Stockholm. There are many boat tours, most of which last between an hour and two hours and a half. The commentary is almost always in English, as well as a number of other languages.

To take full advantage of the boats, buy a Hop-on Hop-off ticket so you can take as many trips by boat as you want in 24 hours.

To reduce the cost of using other public transport, buy a Stockholm Card. With the card, enjoy unlimited travel on SL trains, trams and buses, plus free entry to 80 attractions. The card also includes free boat trips and entitles you to discounts on tours.
