Gothenburg travel guide

Guide to Gothenburg

What gives a city a distinct character is its atmosphere. In Gothenburg, you'll encounter an easy-going and friendly way of life that will entice you. This relaxed approach is evident in the rich cultural diversity and the presence of a large student population.

Harbour and river

Gothenburg, or Göteborg in Swedish, lies on the coast and straddles the Göta älv (Göta river). The city's port is the busiest in Scandinavia. To get a great view of its ships and activities, visit the top of the Göteborgs-Utkiken building.

To see the Gothenburg harbour and city from a different viewpoint, book a boat trip. In addition to taking you along the river and around the harbour, the local ferries can show you the islands to the west of the city.

If you enjoy live music, you've come to the right place when you arrive in Gothenburg. The city has a well established musical tradition that covers most genres. At Göteborgs Operan, you can choose from opera, musical entertainment or ballet. If you prefer classical music, check out the Göteborgs Symfoniker. If you fancy the variety and exuberance of a music hall, go to Valand.

Elsewhere, Scandinavium hosts rock and pop concerts and Jazzhuset offers live jazz on Friday and Saturday nights. Jazzhuset also has pop evenings on Thursdays.

The museums in Gothenburg are all worth a visit. Konstmuseet has significant works of European art. The Göteborgs Maritima Centrum is the world’s largest floating maritime museum, while Naturhistoriska Museet (Natural History Museum) is home to more than 10 million items, including the well preserved body of a blue whale.

These three are just some of the museum highlights in Gothenburg. While you're in the city, try to see the Viking ship at Stadsmuseum and the interactive exhibits at the Universeum science centre.

Take advantage of the Gothenburg City Card, which includes free access to the transportation system, if you plan to visit several attractions. You should also take advantage of Gothenburg's tram system to carry you from one place to the next.

Other attractions

Your visit to Gothenburg is not complete until you've seen some of the other main attractions.

For shopping, head for Kungsportsavenyn or Nordstan Shopping Centre. If you happen to be looking for English-language books, try one of the three branches of Akademibokhandeln.
