Old Market Square

Since the Middle Ages, the city of Poznań has been a center of trade. The Old Market Square, established in 1253, is a natural starting point for exploring the city – by day or by night. In the old days, people came to buy herring, salt and candles. Today, visitors and locals alike flock to the lively, pedestrian-only square to enjoy themselves. The square is distinguished by the beauty and history of its Renaissance Town Hall, the Działyński Palace, rows of colorful merchant houses, old tenement houses and other attractive buildings. Take a stroll, or relax in one of the many indoor and outdoor cafés, taverns and restaurants that line the square.

Citadel Park, Poland's oldest cathedral, and other cultural highlights

To explore the history and soul of Poznan further, you only have to walk around the Old Town or hop on a tram or in a taxi for a short ride. The city's museums span a great range of interests: the Poznań History Museum, the Musical Instruments Museum, the Archaeology Museum, the Motoring Museum, The Museum of Applied Arts, and the National Museum’s Gallery of Art and Sculpture, to name a few.

For some culture you can taste, take a guided tour of the Lech brewery. The Emperor's Castle is a cultural hub where you’ll find concerts, exhibitions, galleries and a history museum – and it comes complete with a jazz club and a pub. The vast Citadel Park, formerly a fortress, offers lots of green space, outdoor sculptures, two military museums and a series of military cemeteries. On Cathedral Island, visit Poland's oldest cathedral where you can view the tombs of the first Polish rulers.
