Get the JR East 4 day flexipass and you can cover eastern (northern) Honshu, including Niigata, Hirosaki (one of the important castle towns), Aomori (views of Hokkaido), Sendai (Matsushima bay, one of the 3 top sea sights) and Nikko (before you die ;-). The west coast journey from Niigata is worth seeing and you get Tokyo thrown in for free.
