Best known for its annual jazz festival, the town of Molde sits on the shoreline of the scenic Romsdalfjord on the west coast of Norway. The city is also famous for the Molde Panorama - an impressive, panoramic view of the snow-covered peaks of the Romsdal Alps. The view can be seen from anywhere in town.
Outdoor recreation is a big reason to visit Molde. From here, you can hike the mountains, go deep sea fishing or diving and explore limestone caves. In town, visit the Romsdalmuseet for a little history of life in the region—or take a drive out of town on the Atlantic Road for spectacular views of the region. During the month of July, join the crowds of people who flock to Molde for Moldejazz, one of Europe's oldest international jazz festivals.
Drive or hike up to the Varden viewpoint to get the best views of Molde and its amazing mountain vistas. From the top you can see the city against the hills, the fjord, islands and the famous Molde Panorama.
The Romsdalmuseet open-air museum features 50 buildings salvaged from across the region, giving you a glimpse of local life from the 14th through 20th centuries. There is an early 20th century street as well as a “reconstructed” church created from salvaged pieces of several wooden stave churches in the region.
This 5-mile long stretch of road connects the towns of Molde and Kristiansund, covering several islands and crossing a number of bridges. In addition to fjords and mountains, you can get an open sea view from the road, which is especially dramatic if there is a storm. The road links a number of small villages, and you can spot seals, birds and the occasional whale en route. There are a number of excellent fishing spots along the road as well.
