Art & history

Paris, the capital of France, is home to one of the world's most famous art museums, the Louvre. It's here where the Mona Lisa makes her home, along with artistic works encompassing every European school of thought across centuries. Paris is also home to many other must-see museums and monuments, including the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame, Centre Pompidou, Musee D’Orsay and of course the Eiffel Tower.

To see how the French royalty once lived, take a trip outside of Paris to Versailles or to the châteaux (castles) in the Loire River valley, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage region. Travel back in time in the fortress town of Carcasonne and wander the cobblestone streets within the city's fortress walls. Visit Mont Saint Michel, an abbey built in the 1200s on top of a small island off the coast of Normandy. While you're in Normandy, walk along the D-Day beaches of Bayeux or visit Giverny, home of painter Claude Monet.

Food & wine

Whether you're in a seaside cafe on the French Riviera, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Paris or a bakery in Provence, you can always get something delicious to eat in France. Wherever you are, you can find both modern and traditional French food—from bistro fare to haute cuisine, cassoulet to bouillabaisse, fresh-baked bread to sublime regional cheeses. The French consider French cuisine to be the best food in the world, and different regions of France have different specialties in which to indulge your tastebuds.

If you like wine, make sure you visit some of France's wine regions and sample the different varieties of French wine. Popular areas include Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône valley and of course Champagne, but there are many other wine-growing regions throughout the country.
