History of Stockholm

A trip to Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden, gives visitors chance to experience an elegant mix of historic sites and modern sources of entertainment. The history of the city dates back to the 13th century, when it was established as a large defensive fort.

Not long after, Stockholm became the largest city within the region and a thriving hub of commercial activity. The heart of the city, known as the Old Town, still survives, with its narrow alleys, Royal Palace and Stockholm Cathedral.

The Royal Palaces are now home to a number of museums and also boast more than 600 rooms, many of which contain works of art. The ruins of the original palace buildings can also be visited, together with soldiers dressed in traditional Swedish uniforms.

The majestic cathedral still provides a stunning experience for visitors, complete with its wooden sculpture of St. George and the dragon.

The architecture of the Old Town was heavily influenced by the arrival of people of German descent, but the approach to building within the city changed once it became the official capital of Sweden in the 17th century.

Riddarhuset, or the House of Knights or House of Nobility, was constructed as a space for visiting knights from the European continent. Drottningholm Court Theatre, constructed in the 18th century, still hosts a variety of plays and other forms of entertainment.

Skansen, an open-air museum, allows visitors to take a step back in time. With a zoo and a significant collection of 19th century buildings, it provides a great opportunity for the whole family to learn about Stockholm's past in a fun and welcoming environment.

Stockholm has undergone significant changes over the years. Fortunately for the visitors of today, many of the finest buildings are still standing and can be seen in glorious settings.
