What's up in Copenhagen

Sightseeing

Copenhagen is a city of superlatives. It boasts the titles of world's most livable city and best design city.

The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen is a wonderful city to visit and explore. There’s no shortage of things to do and places to see. To make your sightseeing as easy as possible, you have access to an excellent transport system of taxis, buses and trains. There’s also a first class metro that experts have named the best metro in the world.

Sightseeing highlights in Copenhagen are numerous. The city dates back to the 11th century, but is also a vibrant modern capital. As a result, you can view the splendid buildings in the Middelalderbyen (the Medieval City), then go on to marvel at ingenious modern creations, such as the Copenhagen Concert Hall, created by the world’s foremost architects. You can also experience the 18th century elegance of the Frederiksstaden district of Copenhagen. If you do, don’t forget to see the decorative Amalienborg Palace.

Another favourite destination in Copenhagen is Christiania. Here you can join a tour organised by the local residents. They live in a unique commune built on what was once a military barracks in the Christianshavn district.

If you enjoy strolling by the water’s edge, you’ll want to visit Copenhagen harbour and see the statue of The Little Mermaid. You can also take leisurely walks on the banks of the city’s canal system.

For something that’s out of the ordinary, consider a Segway tour. A Segway is a self-balancing, two-wheeled electric vehicle that you stand on. In Copenhagen, specially arranged Segway tours can show you the city in an entirely eco-friendly way.

Entertainment

In Copenhagen, you never have to look far for entertainment. If you want to simply watch the world go by, you can relax in one of the cafes. On the other hand, you may wish to amble through one of the many green spaces in the city such as the King’s, Frederiksberg or Botanical Gardens.

For indoor pursuits, you could visit Copenhagen’s museums and art galleries. These include Nationalmuseet (the National Museum) and Statens Museum for Kunst (the National Gallery).

The most popular art museum in Denmark, however, lies just 30 minutes by train north of Copenhagen. Located on the coast, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art has a fascinating array of sculptures, videos and paintings.
For those of you with children and teenagers in your party, you may want a very different form of entertainment. If so, Copenhagen’s Tivoli Amusement Park, established in 1844, will suit you. Here you and your family can find a huge number of attractions including Vertigo, northern Europe's fastest interactive flight simulator.

In the evening, venues such as Parken, Tivoli Concert Hall and Opera House offer ballet, theatre, opera and live music. The music encompasses classical, pop, rock and jazz – there really is something for everyone.
Finally, Copenhagen has a thriving late scene. Most hotspots stay open until five in the morning, keeping the most enthusiastic night owls busy.

SAS flies to the charming city of Copenhagen direct from a number of European airports. Why not book an unforgettable experience right now?

Dining

All this activity will surely whet your appetite. Fortunately, if you love food, you've come to the right city. In a recent Michelin Guide, Copenhagen received 14 stars, more than the culinary hotspots of Berlin, Madrid, Vienna and even Rome.

The Nordic cuisine of Copenhagen uses seasonal and local foods in ways that will delight you as well as satisfying your hunger. Eating out will provide some of the best memories of your time here.

As for snacks and light lunches, you can try an open sandwich – once you’ve decided which of the vast range of fillings you prefer!

To wash down such glorious food, you have a wide choice of locally brewed beers. These come from the many microbreweries within the city and provide a refreshing alternative to wine.

Shopping

If you're in the mood for shopping, Copenhagen will not disappoint you. The best shops are mainly in the Indre By (the City) district, where you will find quality and style.

Elsewhere, there's still plenty of opportunity to browse and buy. Copenhagen is one of the most prosperous cities in the world and has shops to suit every taste.
