Dining in Stockholm

Fly to Stockholm with SAS

Dining in Stockholm is a pure pleasure given its strategic seaside location and access to the freshest seafood available. Among the 1330 restaurants to choose from, many are well worth a visit and eating out is a fulfilling adventure.

Real homemade Swedish cuisine

For an affordable meal, Pelikan has Swedish cuisine like meatballs with lingonberry sauce and pickled herring. Traditional homemade food is the focus and international travelers can get a good taste of the local cuisine. This restaurant has a large beer-hall kind of atmosphere and families dine here regularly.

One of the best restaurants in all of Europe

On the high end of the scale, the two-star restaurant Matsalen, owned by internationally known chef Mathias Dahlgren, is a little taste of heaven on earth. Like other award-winning chefs, Dahlgren uses just a few, simple ingredients in his dishes so that the true taste of the fresh food is the result. The menu changes frequently and reservations are necessary. Eating here is an unparalleled experience.

Upscale Swedish cuisine with seasonal influences

In the heart of Old Town, Kryp In, meaning "crawl in a tiny space," is a cozy little place on a side street. This fresh, local menu with a great reindeer dish has excellent service. Many places in Stockholm serve reindeer, so don't faint - it's not Rudolph.

Vegetarian cuisine in Sweden

Herman's has BBQs outdoors Wednesday through Saturday, only without meat. Most patrons are not even vegetarians, but leave happy and satisfied. Open 11am-10pm daily in summer, the kitchen closes at 9pm except for coffee and dessert. There is a vegetarian buffet for lunch and dinner. The view is a real bonus along with the great food. Hermans offers stunning views across the Baltic Sea over a colorful cityscape you may find in a travel brochure. With 200 indoor and outdoor seats, reservations are not necessary. People with food allergies are in luck here. Ask the staff about your concerns and let them recommend something. Salads, hot and cold dishes and bread are made from scratch every day. Need I say more?

Fresh fish and game with the actual Nobel Prize committee

The Swedish Academy owns “Den gyldene freden” a beautiful old tavern that has been in this spot since 1722. Three hundred years on, the cuisine is still delicious. Those who select the Nobel Prize winners dine here on Thursdays to enjoy fresh fish, local game and new Swedish cuisine. Dishes like sautéed duck breast with pickled pumpkin and beef carpaccio with goat cheese and citrus salsa are new cuisine items. The dark chocolate cake with fresh raspberries and coffee ice cream should not be ignored. Located in Gamla stan, or the Old Town, this upscale restaurant is not inexpensive and you should definitely make reservation.
