Longyearbyen is the main town of Norway's Svalbard archipelago and the area's primary port and administrative center. The town sits on the Isfjorden (ice fjord) on Spitsbergen, the largest island of Svalbard. Longyearbyen was established in 1906 and today has a small population of around 2000 inhabitants. The backdrop for Longyearbyen is stunning. Large glaciers cover most of the island while ice bergs float around the city.

Despite the small number of residents, the town has a few cultural activities and sights worth visiting, including the Svalbard museum and Longyearbyen gallery—and of course numerous restaurants and pubs. However, the primary reason for visiting Longyearbyen is to explore the natural wilds of the Svalbard islands.

Svalbard Museum

The Svalbard Museum presents the history and life in Svalbard from the last 400 years. The exhibits explore the relationship between nature, man, culture, technology and the environment in the Arctic. You can learn about Svalbard's first settlements, whaling and mining industries and expeditions in the area. The museum also covers some of the scientific research conducted in Svalbard as well as an overview of the nature found in the region.

Longyearbyen Gallery

Longyearbyen Gallery features the Svalbard collection of old maps and books. There are also paintings and photographs on display here from Norwegian artists.

During the summer, you can hike in the area or take a boat or kayak among the sea life and take in the scenery from the water. In the winter, glacier walks, dog-sledding, skiing and snowmobiling are popular activities.

Kayaking Billefjorden in the innermost part of Isfjorden offers a chance to experience buzzing animal life. If you are lucky, there may even be a polar bear hunting for seals on the ice flows by the glaciers. /
