Passenger information and first night address

US authorities require detailed information before passengers are granted permission to enter the US.

Before you travel, you must do the following:

  1. Fill in Secure Flight and APIS (no later than 72 hours before departure)
  2. Fill in ESTA (authorities recommend this be done 72 hours before departure)

Passengers who leave or enter the US should be prepared to have their fingerprints and photograph taken. US authorities will use them to compare passenger arrival and departure information. You must have a machine-readable passport in order to be able to travel to the US.

1. Secure Flight & APIS

US Secure Flight

 For travel to/from the US, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires you to provide your name as it appears in your passport, gender and date of birth in the reservation. This also applies if you have received a redress nummer from the TSA (for example, if you have had repeated problems with getting your boarding pass approved).

When you book your ticket on, you will be asked to fill in Secure Flight in the booking dialogue. Alternatively, we ask you to fill it in online no later than 72 hours before departure. If the information is not filled in up to 72 hours before departure, you may be denied boarding. You are responsible for submitting this information to SAS on time. If you are departing within 72 hours, please contact SAS Customer Contact Center immediately.

If you are travelling with children under two years of age, contact SAS Customer Contact Center or your travel agency to register passenger information.

Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) - first night in the US

All airlines are required to collect and submit certain travel and reservation information for all passengers and crew members. This includes information on the passenger's homeland and address during his or her stay in the US. The information is used for security purposes. You can download the form and submit it at check-in or fill it in online. The address for the first night in the US does not apply for US citizens and green card holders.

2. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)

US authorities have tightened security requirements for travel to/from and through the US, which means that you cannot board a plane without an ESTA or a valid visa.

US authorities require that passengers who do not have a visa but meet the requirements for travel under the Visa Waiver Program apply electronically for entry to the US. The ESTA (Electronic System Travel for Authorization) application must be completed before departure. The authorities recommend that it be completed at least 72 hours before departure. In most cases, the application is processed immediately and a response is issued online within several seconds, but it can take longer. It is the passenger's own responsibility to apply for and obtain an ESTA.

It is the passenger's own responsibility to apply for and present an ESTA. An approved ESTA is valid for 2 years and multiple entries to the US. US authorities require an ESTA approval before you enter the US. Please ensure that the application is filled out with the correct passport information. The check-in process will verify if the passenger has an approved ESTA - and whether the information presented matches the passport. If this is not the case, you may be denied entry to the US.

Note: If you have a B1 or B2 visa, you do not need to apply for an ESTA. US authorities charge a $14 fee per ESTA applicant. Apply for an ESTA here

Members of the Visa Waiver Program

Citizens of countries that are not members of the Visa Waiver Program must contact the US embassy in order to apply for a visa.

Most citizens of Scandinavian countries can travel to the US without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program.

If you do not have a machine-readable passport or are planning to spend more than 90 days in the US, you can apply for a visa by contacting the US embassy before departure.

Don't lock baggage

When travelling to, from or through the US, please do NOT lock your luggage unless if you have a special lock that is approved by US authorities, or a so-called TSA lock. If your suitcase is locked during the trip to, from or through the US and your baggage is subsequently damaged from being opened by US authorities, SAS will not cover the damages.

Check-in and e-ticket

For travel to the US, you can check in online or at the airport at a self-service terminal or check-in desk. If you are travelling on an e-ticket and have not received a paper ticket, please remember to bring a printed copy of your itinerary that you received by email. The itinerary can be used as documentation if you travel further in the US and when you travel back from the US.
