Aalborg

Aalborg

Aalborg
(Ålborg) was originally settled as a trading post based on its position on the Limfjord at the entrance to the North Sea. The city remains an important industrial and commercial center in Denmark.

With some of the area's most picturesque houses from the 17th century, Aalborg is the country's fourth-largest municipality and boasts an approachable and fun-loving city feel. The city is also home to the Aalborg Zoo, Aalborg Maritime Museum and the Utzon waterfront.

Museums and family attractions in Aalborg

Aalborg offers a variety of entertainment options for families with children. Open year-round, the Aalborg Zoo is the perfect destination for a family visit. See one of the world's best enclosures for polar bears designed specifically for the behavior of the animals and more than 1200 other animals over 8.5 acres of public land.

The Aalborg Maritime Museum, also open year-round, exhibits the history of the Danish merchant fleet over the past 200 years. Its main attraction is the Springeren submarine, the last class of submarines to be fully designed and built in Denmark.

The Utzon waterfront is also worth a visit. It was named and designed by Sydney Opera House architect Jørn Utzon, who grew up in Aalborg. Take in a visit to the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg and the Utzon Center to experience the transformation of the waterfront. If that isn't enough, complete your visit with a trip to Karolinelund Amusement Park with its roller coasters, carousels and other rides and attractions.

Outside Aalborg

Just outside of Aalborg, visit northern Jutland's stunning countryside and fantastic bathing beaches full of what nature has to offer. In the summertime, join Danish locals in towns such as Løkken and Blokhus facing the Skagerrak. The beach sands are surprisingly fine and white and are amongst the most expansive in Europe.

Take a day trip up to Skagen, the northernmost tip of Denmark, where the two parts of the North Sea, the Kattegat and Skagerrak, literally meet in front of your eyes.

Shopping in Aalborg

Despite its smaller stature, there is no shortage of shopping in Aalborg. From the boutiques on walking streets, Bispensgade and Algade, to the smaller shops selling fashions from up and coming young designers, you never know what you’ll discover in Aalborg. When your feet need a rest from all of the shopping, take a break at any of the bars and restaurants on Jomfru Ane Gade.

Denmark is generally good for shopping and so is Aalborg. However, don't just walk along the obvious shooping streets. Check out the small shops on the side streets. They can offer a more personal shopping experience than the main streets.
