Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, has a rich and varied history. There's been a settlement at this location for more than 1000 years and it became the capital of the country in 1443.
Unlike some other historic cities, many of the early buildings still remain. As a result, Copenhagen is a popular destination for tourists, combining cultural sites with contemporary experiences.
Find the oldest amusement park
To the north of the city is Bakken, which is believed to be the oldest amusement park in the world. It was first opened for business more than 400 years ago and still draws a large number of visitors with its rides and shows. The world-famous Tivoli Gardens amusement park has also a rich history, dating back to 1843.
Visit the Danish Royal family
The city has strong links with the Danish royal family and the current queen of Denmark resides at Amalienborg Palace, which was first constructed back in 1748. The changing of the Royal Guard takes place at noon each day, with a march from Rosenborg Castle to Amalienborg Palace. The daily event is popular with tourists and is best viewed from Bredgade.
Rosenborg Castle itself houses the Danish Crown Jewels and also provides a backdrop for those looking to spend a relaxing few hours within the grounds. The castle was constructed during the reign of King Christian IV and was completed in 1634. It was the official home of Denmark's royal family for almost 100 years and now acts as an informative museum.
Denmark also has strong links with Shakespeare's Hamlet and the fictional character's home and these can be found at Kronborg Castle, which is within easy reach of the city. Links with Hans Christian Andersen, the creator of so many famed fairy tales, can also be found throughout the city. Most obviously, the statue of the Little Mermaid provides a focal point for many visitors.
Within the thriving city of Copenhagen, there are numerous historic sites of interest. No visit to the city would be complete without delving into the long history that's associated with this place.
