Art and design in Stockholm
In Stockholm, mediaeval buildings rub shoulders with Art Nouveau styles from the early 20th century, 1930s modernism and contemporary architecture. It's fitting that the Swedish capital is also home to a huge number of museums and galleries where you can explore art and design from the past to the present.
The National Museum, Sweden's national gallery, is home to an extensive collection of drawings, paintings, sculpture and other works of art from all over the world, dating back to the Middle Ages.
The Arkitekturmuseet has a permanent collection relating to Swedish architecture as well as rotating exhibitions showcasing contemporary design and living. The annual exhibition of gingerbread houses is particularly popular.
The art gallery at Marabouparken is set within a beautifully landscaped historic park dotted with sculptures so you can take in some culture outdoors as well as indoors. There are workshops and activities for both adults and children. Millesgården also boasts a sculpture garden, which, along with its permanent exhibition of antiques, forms part of the personal collection of its founders.
Sweden is a forward-looking country and many of Stockholm's museums concentrate on modern art. The Moderna Museet, centrally located on the island of Skeppsholmen, exhibits art from the 20th century and onwards, while Bonniers Konsthall has a frequently changing exhibition of contemporary Swedish and international design and Liljevalchs hosts four or more large exhibitions annually. Out in the suburb of Tensta, you can find the Tensta Konsthall, where contemporary art is produced as well as shown.
Stockholm's museums and galleries are a great way to learn about Swedish artists and designers, many of whom are little known outside their own country, while enjoying a range of beautiful and thought-provoking artwork.
