Norway's national sport
If you love skiing, you’ll love Norway! Not only does Norway boast excellent physical conditions for skiing, the activity is also considered the Norwegian national sport. In the winter, young and old alike hit the slopes to enjoy the deep powdery snow and spectacular views of Norway’s mountains, valleys, forests, waterfalls and fjords.
The Norwegian ski season generally runs from November to April, but you can ski during the summer too at Norway's high-altitude resorts such as the ski center at Stryn, located near the largest glacier in continental Europe.
Big city and countryside skiing
SAS flies non-stop from the US to Oslo, Norway’s capital city. Just 20 minutes outside of the city center at Holmenkollen, you can enjoy the delights of skiing in Norway (link 1). Boasting 18 slopes and 7 lifts, the modern Oslo Winter Park Tryvann alpine ski resort is located just a quick metro ride from downtown Oslo and offers alpine skiing, snowboarding, Telemark skiing and areas for children and beginners, as well as terrain parks and two half-pipes. You can even go skiing after dark, as 56 miles of tracks are lit up until 10 pm.
Holmenkollen has hosted the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships four times, last in 2011, and the Holmenkollen Ski Museum & Tower is home to the world’s oldest ski museum. The city of Oslo itself is famous for its sophisticated culture and wide array of museums. Snow and ice enthusiasts will probably enjoy the Fram Museum, where you can walk onboard the world’s strongest polar vessel and learn about famous polar explorers.
Throughout Norway, you will find alpine ski resorts and beautiful trails for cross-country skiing. Each location offers something unique. There are several excellent ski resorts within driving distance from Oslo, including Hemsedal (considered by many the best ski area in Norway), Hafjell (site of the 1994 Lillehammer Olympic giant slalom and slalom events), Geilo (one of Norway's oldest ski resorts and a fantastic area for kite-skiing) and Trysil (Norway’s largest ski resort and popular with families).
