Tivoli is Copenhagen's famous amusement park located in the heart of the city. The park opened in 1843 and is the second-oldest amusement park in the world, as well as the world’s most popular city park. The site offers a wide variety of rides, shows and attractions to appeal to guests of all ages. Tivoli also features a wonderful selection of shops and restaurants that together complement a special day out. The park is generally open from mid-April to late September.
Tivoli’s 21 acres are beautifully landscaped with flower beds and fountains, explaining why the park is also commonly referred to as Tivoli Gardens. Although many visitors come to Tivoli to enjoy the amusement park attractions, the park is equally appealing as a fine place to stroll and people watch.
Tivoli comes alive at night when thousands of customized lights illuminate the park. The park also features many buildings with impressive architecture, including the Chinese Tower, Glass Hall Theater and Concert Hall. One of the most famous structures in Tivoli, known as Nimb, is reminiscent of the Taj Mahal and contains Copenhagen's most luxurious hotel.
Tivoli amusement park
No amusement park is complete without a selection of thrill rides. Tivoli offers everything from classic thrills to modern technical marvels.
The park's classic wooden roller coaster dating from 1914, Rutschebanen, is one of the oldest in the world and one of the last remaining scenic railway style rides. At the same time, Tivoli's modern steel roller coaster Dæmonen opened in 2004 and features four inversions through 1851 feet of twisted track.
Other thrill rides in the park include the Star Flyer, a huge swing ride providing panoramic views of Copenhagen, and the Golden Tower, a terrifyingly fun drop ride. Tivoli also has many rides catering to younger children and those seeking something a bit tamer. Classic staples such as bumper cars, a Ferris wheel and several dark rides provide plenty of fun for all ages.
Live entertainment in Tivoli
In addition to an amusement park, Tivoli functions as a venue for a variety of live entertainment, featuring everything from blues to big band performances. The park currently has half a dozen theatres, including the 1660-seat Tivoli Concert Hall built in 1956. During the warmer summer months, the park offers a series of live music performances.
Dining and shopping in Tivoli
Tivoli also features an amazing variety of dining and shopping experiences. The park offers over 30 restaurants and bars, featuring everything from casual to full-service establishments. Plenty of cafés with outdoor seating provide opportunities for guests to enjoy Tivoli's pleasant atmosphere. Shops all around the park offer a selection of souvenirs, candy and other assorted items.
The highlight for many visitors to Tivoli is the Illuminations, which takes place every evening. Over 120,000 incandescent light bulbs come alive with a soft glow to create a warm and romantic feeling. The lights dot the rides, buildings, fountains, trees and avenues as well as along Tivoli's lake. It is considered the perfect ending to a fabulous day of fun at Tivoli!
