Harstad and Narvik do not compete for your attention. Instead, they complement each other with their range of attractions.
Harstad lies at the northern end of Norway's largest island, Hinnøya. It’s the biggest town in the Vesterålen region and the second-largest urban district in Troms County.
From the moment you arrive in Harstad, you'll see that it's a busy coastal area. You can take part in the maritime life yourself by hiring a boat for fishing or sightseeing. You can also walk or cycle across Hinnøya Island and explore its wonderful scenery.
If you prefer to stay in town, there's plenty to do. Visit the modern complex of swimming pools known locally as Grottebadet, for instance. If you're here in June, don’t miss the lively North Norwegian Festival of Culture.
Two other experiences the area is famous for are the midnight sun, which appears from 22 May to 18 July, and the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), which you can see on clear winter nights.
Both Harstad and Narvik have beautiful locations. Narvik sits on a peninsula between two fjords, Rombak and Beis. It also has a wonderful backdrop in the form of the 4000 ft.-high Fagernes Mountain.
As well as lying on the coast, Narvik has numerous rivers and lakes nearby. This makes the town and the surrounding region a desirable destination for fishing enthusiasts.
Whatever type of fishing you enjoy, you'll find something to suit you. Fish from the shore, take a boat out to the fjords, go fly fishing in the rivers or drift in the clear calm waters of the lakes and see what fish your bait and lures bring you.
If you enjoy fishing with a difference, come to Narvik in the winter. You can then follow the example of the locals and try fishing through a hole in the ice.
Other winter activities in Narvik include skiing. The cross-country treks, set among fantastic scenery, are great fun. In the summer, there’s also plenty to occupy you. You can play golf or go diving off the coast. You can enjoy walks in the forests and alongside the rivers and lakes. Or if you prefer, why not hire a bike for the day and cycle along the marked trails?
Whatever you decide to do in Harstad and Narvik, you will have an adventurous time. Book your flights with SAS now.

A bit of a drive from Narvik, but well worth it if you like to see whales and learn more about them. Besides the actual whale safari, there is the Whale Museum, with a nice exhibition and a sperm whale skeleton as its main attraction.
