Northern Lights - City Breaks in Scandinavia

Northern Lights in Scandinavia

See the Northern Lights in Scandinavia

Scandinavia is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. And now NASA has predicted that 2012 will have the best conditions for decades to see this natural wonder. Like curtains caught by the wind, the Northern Lights are elusive. However, when they do make an appearance, the entire sky explodes in colour.

When can I see them?

The Aurora Borealis, known as the Northern Lights, happen all year round but you need dark and clear conditions in order to see them. Generally, the prime seasons for viewing the Northern Lights are early autumn and spring. Most Northern Lights eruptions occur between 6pm and midnight, particularly around 10-11pm. However, the Northern Lights are unpredictable and no one knows when the lights will show.

Hunting the lights

It is possible to take a short holiday with a good chance of seeing the lights while also enjoying a range of activities such as dog or reindeer sledding, snowmobiling or numerous Northern Lights expeditions. Whale watching also offers good opportunities for aurora viewing.

The best place on earth

Northern Scandinavia is a very convenient destination for shorter breaks. Only a few hours away from Ireland, you are not far away from seeing your first Northern Lights. Why not take advantage of the many tours and excursion available? Activities normally include husky and reindeer safaris, ice fishing trips and guided snowshoeing excursions, as well as snowmobile safaris. Spend the night in a cozy log cabin complete with individual saunas and perhaps one night in an igloo?
