Special baggage

Stroller/Pram

When travelling with an infant you are allowed to bring a stroller/pram free of charge.You need to send it as checked baggage and for protection we offer special plastic bags at check in.

Wheelchair

Our service includes wheelchair assistance at all airports as well as in-flight wheelchairs on intercontinental flights. You are allowed to bring your wheelchair free of charge. Please note that a wheelchair powered by a spillable battery has to be sent as cargo. 

Other special baggage

Special fees and conditions apply for the transport of weapons, musical instruments, bulky baggage items, fragile baggage (such as glass panes), etc. Please obtain information in good time from  SAS or your Travel Agent.

Sporting and other weapons

Sporting and other weapons may only be transported as cargo or checked baggage, i.e. transportation as unchecked baggage is forbidden.
The weapons must be suitably packed and ammunition must be removed.
The firearm must be divided into two pieces with the bolt packed in a separate piece of  checked baggage.
At departure the firearms must always be declared the check-in or baggage drop.

Musical instruments

Cello:

Please note that the only musical instrument that can be accepted in the passenger cabin on SAS flights is a cello, provided that an extra seat for the cello has been booked and paid for at time of reservation. Such reservations cannot be made online, please contact SAS or your travel agent.

Double-Bass/contrabass:

Double-basses/contrabasses cannot be accepted for transportation on SAS Boeing 737-600 aircraft, due to limited space in cargo holds of Boeing 737-600 aircraft.

Sports Equipment

In addition of the free baggage allowance , one piece of sporting equipment may be transported free of charge when you travel in Business or Economy Extra, or if you are a EuroBonus Gold member.

Sporting equipment baggage is not a part of the free baggage allowance in Economy class. This applies to both weight and piece concept.

When you travel within Europe and make your reservation using the SAS website, you can prepay your sports equipment at a 10% reduced rate.

Packaging for sports and special baggage
At most destinations SAS provides a range of packing material, such as plastic bags and cardboard containers. Passengers in Economy will be charged € 5 for each item. Passengers in Business and Economy Extra, as well as EuroBonus Gold members can obtain such material free of charge. 

Sports equipment that exceeds the standard dimensions for baggage or the weight of the free baggage allowance must not contain any other objects from your baggage. If it does, the normal excess baggage fee will be charged according to the zone or per item (see excess baggage). Example: Golf equipment of 18 kgs: the passenger has to pay for the extra kg according to the over weight charge for the zone where the journey is made.

NOTE! For small aircrafts like F50/Q400 it is important to check with the airline if medium and large special baggage will be accepted.

Bicycles

Bicycles always require prior request. In order to protect other pieces of baggage from damage, bicycles may only be accepted as baggage provided that the handlebar is turned lengthwise and the pedals are removed.

Ski/water ski equipment

This includes one pair of skis, one pair of ski sticks, boots, one snowboard, one pair of standard water skis or one slalom water ski.

Golf equipment

One golf bag including golf clubs, balls and one pair of golf shoes.

Surfboards

Surfboards longer than 200 cm are classified as windsurfing boards.

Windsurfing boards

Windsurfing boards can only be accepted on some aircraft types, and specific dimensions apply per aircraft type. Please contact your travel agent for details.  The board must be checked in no later than 2 hours before departure, and you have to notify us in advance. If the board exceeds the limits for the specific aircraft type, it has to be sent as cargo

Canoes, Kayaks (except for White Water Kayaks) and hang gliders

These items are only accepted as cargo on SAS.

White Water Kayaks

A White water kayak is made of rigid plastic (not soft shell or glass fiber) and for transport by SAS it must be packed in a case/bag. The size of a White Water kayak should not exceed 2.5 x 1.0 x 0.8 meters and maximum weight not more than 32 kgs.

Diving equipment

The oxygen bottle must be completely empty.

Angling equipment

One bait box, angler bag or basket, and one rod, bag or box.
