2. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) for travel to or via the USA
Heightened Security Measures from March 1, 2010
The US authorities require passengers eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (see above table) to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) online before departure. In most cases the application is handled immediately, and you will receive an instant answer online.
It is the responsibility of the passenger to secure that an ESTA has been approved prior to departure. The US authorities recommend that an application is done at the latest 72 hours before departure.
An approved ESTA will be valid 2 years and allows for multiple visits to the USA. If you renew your passport you need to make a new ESTA application. Until 7 September 2010, the ESTA application is free of charge at ESTA´s website. U.S. authorities have announced that as of 8 September, a fee of $ 14 will be charged per application
Please note, if you hold a B1 or B2 visa, you do not need to apply for an ESTA.
NEW! US authorities have increased security measures further, thus SAS can no longer accept passengers under the Visa Waiver Program for check-in if an ESTA has not been approved, valid from/after March 1, 2010.
