Things to do in Sweden

Things to do in Sweden - fly with SAS from the UK!

Nestled in the Baltic Sea, Sweden is a country rich in culture that it loves to share with the world.

With winters that can be surprisingly warm, Sweden is inviting all year round. Imagine daylight lasting 18 hours in late spring or visualise a place where the sun never sets for part of the summer nor rises for parts of any winter. Is there a better environment for maximising a vacation?

Spend Christmas in pulsating Gothenburg. The heart and soul of Scandinavia, Gothenburg encompasses a thrilling coastline, islands, lakes and forests. Go on a lobster safari, kayak along historic manor houses and visit any of its famous museums. Christmas itself is celebrated at the Lane of Lights among other places, a 3-kilometre stunning display of outdoor lights that starts at the Wheel of Gothenburg by the harbour and goes up the boulevard of Winter Wonderland.

Christmas in Malmö shouldn’t be missed either. "Shop Window Sunday" is when the city's shops attempt to outdo one other with the most breathtaking window displays. There's also the coronation of Lucia, a Swedish celebration of lights.

Before leaving the impression that Sweden is no more than a December vacation, remember these ideal conditions are available all year round. Malmö and Gothenburg markets offer handicrafts, food and so much more. Malmö's Ribersborg beach sits in the centre of town. It's a dreamy sandy 2-kilometre stretch easily accessible over a casual walk. With one of the largest parks in Sweden, Malmö is considered the greener side of this striking country.

Worldwide, Stockholm is considered the epitome of fashion and creativity. Swedish design is known for combining function and form in everything from furniture to clothes. Enjoy the pubs, the cafés and restaurants and soak in the music. The city thrives on its nightlife, but be ready to spend the days trying to not spend money in the most exciting stores in the world, where you will be floored by the mix of fashion, design, clothes and accessories.

In between shopping, take a break in gorgeous Royal Djurgården park, an undisturbed island of parkland and forest, or explore Skogskyrkogården Woodland Cemetery, Drottningholm Palace, or the remains of the Birka Viking settlement on Björkö island in Lake Mälaren.

Walking around Stockholm is a pleasure and activity by itself. Still, Stockholm has an extensive public transportation network, so it is convenient to visit Gamla stan, filled with picturesque streets and historic sites, or Skeppsholmen island, full of art and culture. There isn't a stretch of Stockholm that doesn't offer a unique experience of sights, attractions and destinations.

There still hasn't been a single mention of skiing in Sweden. With the midnight sun or the kaleidoscopic curtain of the Northern Lights as your setting, what else could be more enticing? There is no shortage of things to do in Sweden.

Is it any wonder that this Nordic paradise should be your next flight out with SAS? Book now!
